Million-Dollar Tariff Charge

Third-Generation GSD Cargo Bike

A Million-dollar tariff charge is what Tern is facing. Speculation surrounding the impact of tariffs runs high, as Tern’s North American general manager, Steve Boyd, reveals the staggering cost. The tariff burden has jumped from an expected $20-30K to an overwhelming $1 million.

“I don’t want anything with a 46% duty,” Boyd said and he told the Vietnamese factory to not ship anything. For Tern, the 46% duty is a non starter. Trending on Reddit is Tern’s tariff discussion with BicycleRetailer.

If you’re shopping for a new bike, unless it’s handbuilt in the USA, probably best to buy sooner rather than later. Tern just announced the 3rd generation GSD. I understand they have pre-tariff models on hand. If you’re shopping, the 3rd generation Tern has a lot to offer; including, a better ride.

The new GSD is stable and in control. A reinforced frame features larger-diameter hydroformed tubing. The longer wheelbase and lower center of gravity provide better balance and handling.

What is New?

Tern has redesigned nearly every aspect of the GSD to enhance performance, handling, and convenience. Key upgradesinclude:

  • Increased hauling capacity – Up to 210 kg (463 lb) Max Gross Vehicle Weight
  • Improved frame and geometry – Greater stability, even when fully loaded
  • Bosch Smart System integration – Advanced security features, GPS tracking, and ABS braking
  • Expanded accessory ecosystem – More options for cargo, passenger, and weather protection

Good luck on getting one.
