In colors muted like a mule with 11 speeds, aero helmets, and disc brakes that sound like a howler monkey. How we’re supposed to ride road in 13, according to the industry.

A generation ago, it was a “corncob” in the back, wool, leather chamois, and hair nets. We ate bananas and drank water. Recovery was a nap. And quantification occurred in the race results taped to the side of a school.

How the hell did we do it?
