It’s Friday: Let’s Ride… to Work

KP.jpg

Reminder – Tomorrow is Bike to Work day, the best day all month to commute on your bike. Here in Seattle we’ve got an event organized by Cascade and sponsored by Starbucks (among others) replete with stations all over town where you can check in for some schwag. No worries if you’re not in Seattle, are rides all around the country.

Now, schwag is lovely, but it ain’t really enough to get me to stop most days. What should get you our riding and maybe even stopping at a promo-hut is the chance to get counted. Turns out our fair city doesn’t do an annual census, and tomorrow’s the day to vote with your feet – show the city how many of us are out there for transportation and how vital our cycling facilities are.10,000+ riders rode last year, it’ll be interesting to see how many more this year with gas prices up over 40 cents a gallon from last year. Plus the weather in Seattle is supposed to be fantastic tomorrow, so we’ll see ya out there. If you’ve checking in post commute – how’d it go?

I’ll be out there first thing rolling in the Hugger kit.  If you see me on the North end of Burke Gilman - say hi!

So bummed that I have to drive 400 miles to get to work today. Argh.

I was asked, “Did you ride to work today?”
(I ride to work every day :) )

Um, it went just fine until i got to work and a co-worker pointed me to this news story.

Mugging of cyclist in tunnel spurs warning

I’m really agitated.

Socks? Did anyone get any socks from Cascade?

I got interviewed on camera for Komo, you may see me and my geeky helmet mounted miner light on the news this evening.

No socks!  I stopped by 5 stations with my co-workers who were all excited for Hugga-socks!

Out in West Seattle, we had over 600 riders come by in just two hours.  We distributed three boxes of bananas, several gallons of coffee, about 60 copies of Momentum magazine, and lots of chocolate truffles.  I reapired one broken spoke, two flats, and various maladjusted brakes and derailleurs.  We hauled everything in and out on our awe inspiring cargo bikes, and in the process we decided that the correct term for a group of cargo bikes is a “pallet”, as in: “There goes a pallet of cargo bikes headed for the Bike to Work Day station.”  It was an absolute blast.  Then I rode to work.

@Val Did the liquor bottles survive? I rode with Pam on the Hotspur and then back out later today. Oh and clipless pedal lady! Beware of her.

Clipless pedal lady?  I know not whereof you speak…no mishaps whatsoever on our end, don’t you know.

The lady that careened into me at the bike station! She couldn’t unclip was the cause.

Wow, I missed that - must have been looking at a bike (can’t help myself).  You survived, though, right?  You have to expect this sort of thing when youthful high spirits are flowing, as they were.  Just consider it a slam dance commute.
