Local Legend

Mick Walsh is one of the nice-guys of the Seattle area elite races. Byron and I have raced against him for years. I’ve seen some pics of Mick from “back in the day” in Ireland, but is how I know him:

Anyway - stumbled across an article about Mick today in IrishCycling.com. Check out the other names listed as his contemporaries, “Martin Earley, Paul Kimmage…Sean Kelly”. Keep scrolling and you find this gem of a photo from the podium of the 1985 Milk Ras.

Milk Ras

Amazing. Mick (right) on the podium with 2 of the greatest cyclists of the 1980s.

Nice and a pleasure when Mick shows up at a race where no one knows who he is. Poulter (another old Pro) does that two. Last year at the Tuesday Worlds, he’s there with the Masters sees me looks around click, click, bang and he’s gone. So I say to the front of the peloton, “if you don’t close that gap in the next 15 seconds or so, you’ll never see him again.” They weren’t concerned, cause he wasn’t a known threat. Won the race that night by minutes.
