Drunk Driver Plows Into Group of 100 Cyclists

We just got pointed to a story on the AP wire that says that a drunk driver in Los Angeles plowed into a group of cyclists who were part of a regular night ride in downtown LA. The driver was apparently using her cell phone at the time as well. Nine cyclists were injured, six of them seriously.

From the LATimes

The site L.A. Now (in a later report) says that 11 cyclists were hurt and identifies the driver as 27-year old Christine Dahab, who is being held on $15,000 bail.

That website adds “There may have been mitigating factors, said reporters from KABC Channel 7 and KTLA Channel 5, who spoke with officers, victims and witnesses at the scene. Some of the cyclists may have been stopped in the road under a streetlight that was not operating, they said.”

What! that fact that a streetlight was not working was a factor?!  B.S. there are many sections of road that do not have street lights it is the drivers responsibility to make sure they are not running over people!  Already the media is making excuses for this person? Nuts!

I agree with JR above: “mitigating factor” implies something that lessens the accused’s culpability. Cyclists following the law and exercising due caution is not “mitigating”.
