Sycip Salumi cargo bike

Jeremy Sycip just shot me an email with Sycip Designs’ latest experiment: the Salumi. I haven’t even had a chance to talk to Jeremy about it, but it seems like the bike is a handbuilt cargo bike with a 20” front wheel and 700C rear. You can tell that the brothers Jay and Jeremy have a powdercoating facility since the fenders and rims are the same finish as the frame. And you wouldn’t coat the rims if you didn’t have disc brakes. In fact, the Salumi seems to have the excellent Shimano Alfine internally-geared rear and dynamo front disc hubs, though I couldn’t see a light from the pix. A fun bike, but don’t forget these guys make some serious performance bikes too, especially cyclocross.

it’s true that the Salumi is similar to the ANT, though it’s more like both are emulating an old style of cargo bike that harkens back to pre-WWII times.  Both builders are using modern components and fittings.

What I interpret from these designs is that reducing the front wheel allows a large, low storage platform to fit.  I think these bikes are an interesting counterpoint to the emergence of longtail bikes like Bike Hugger’s Betty Projects.

Indeed Mark. I really like them. So excited to see more utility bikes & designs - old & new. Bikes are the future.

It looks like this is a serious performance bike.

The cross-bar is going to help. What no builder I’ve seen address, is the side-to-side head tube issue. Grab your handlebars now and shake them side to side and notice how much movement there is. Put 30 pounds up front and imagine what that’s going to do. We need massive head tubes. I don’t think really a little wheel is going to make any difference in that handling. Note: no diss at all to current builders—they’re working with what they got and with steel or ti tubes, they’re limited by bottom brackets and head tubes. That’s why carbon builders are going to their own internal bearings, cause they can make huge custom shapes. Dare I say, someone make a carbon cargo bike that can handle?

Looks like a near carbon copy of the Schwinn Cycle Truck.


I’m not a real bicycle historian.  Does anyone know if there was anyone predating Schwinn with this style of bike, either in the states or Europe?
