Bicycle Songs

I’ve been thinking about that bicycle movie list posted a while ago. There’s this Japanese movie called Messengers that I’ve wanted to see. It kinda sounds like the movie Quicksilver if Kevin Bacon was a woman…and Japanese (actually that’s a disturbing image). Anyways, I’ve always been into music more than movies, so invite people to submit their favourite bicycle songs. Rules: it’s gotta be pretty obvious that the song is referring to bicycles, not motorcycles. so I here’s my own list of bicycle songs to start the ball rolling:

The Trucks- Big Afros (self-titled) My two favorite things in life: big Afros and riding bikes with you.

Orbit- Bicycle Song (Libido Speedway) What a pretty bicycle she said, I want one just like that.

Lily Allen-LDN (Alright, Still) Riding thru the city on my bike all day cause the filth took away my license

They Might Be Giants- Narrow Your Eyes (Apollo 18) get on my bike, ride down our block, ride thru the rows, thru the green lights, but when I think of all your advice, I narrow my eyes…

Tori Amos- Pretty Good Year (Under The Pink) Tears on the sleeve of a man, don’t wanna be a boy today. Heard the eternal footman bought himself a bike to race

The Smiths- This Charming Man (originally 7 single) Punctured bicycle on a hillside desolate, will Nature make a man of me yet?

The Pixies - Tony’s Theme

...
He’s got the oil on his chain, for a ride in the rain
No baloney
Ride around on my bicycle like a pony
I’m waving hi, hi, hi, hi, hi
...
I am Tony, super bicycle Tony, I’m racing
Spitfire turn and pop a wheelie, burn and evil chasing
I’m waving bye, bye, bye, bye, bye
I got a card in my spokes
...

A few moew from Down Under!!!!
The Pushbike Song - The Mixtures (Australia)
Bicycle, Part One and Two (22 wheels of Joy)- Luminous Flesh Giants (Australia)
Biker Like an Icon - Paul McCartney

The Decemberists - Apology Song.  A great tune about having a borrowed bike get stolen on your watch.

Kraftwerk - Tour De France.  A classic!!!

Abdominal - Pedal Pusher

For any of those bike music savy out there, I’m trying to figure out an artist of a bike song I’ve heard a few times.  I think the title is “Street Fighter”, and there’s a lyric about “Two wheels and legs of steel” or something.  Help me out!

They Might Be Giants have a couple more bike influenced songs, “Dirt Bike” and “South Carolina” by John Linnell of TMBG

and I don’t know if they’ve got a specific song, but Flight of the Conchords have a bike in many of their scenes, including a funny scene with a tandem.

Streetlight Serenade (To No One) by the Bouncing Souls. Great song about why he loves his bike.

I have a bike song stuck in my head but I have not been able to find the name of the song the lyrics have been stuck in my head for a while now and they go ‘pedal on, pedal on, pedal on for miles…get on my bike and pedal on, pedal on pedal on for miles” Its rhythmic and the imagery is nice talking about the scenery and the rain but I can only remember the chorus. Any suggestions as to who it might be, or what the name of the song is.

Heidi: the song you’re looking for is Luka Bloom’s Acoustic Motorbike

To Jones M - The “Street Fighter” song is by a band called The New Kings.  See http://www.myspace.com/newkings.

“Are you ridin’ or hidin’?”

U-lock Justice by R.A.M.B.O.

Bicycle, Bicycle, You Are My Bicycle by Be Your Own Pet

East Side Mags by The Bouncing Souls

Bikes and Bridges by Defiance, Ohio

BLF by Thrashin’ in the Streets

Bike Thief by Freezepop

Those last two songs are about stealing bikes, which is totally lame…but the songs are kinda fun.

“Cross country Atom and his package bicycle tour” is an awesome homage to bicycle touring.  All one minute and 51 seconds of it:      “Raise your head; raise your head; raise your head; it’s a long day coming!”

Bike Ride to the Moon The Dukes of Stratosphear (XTC)

My White Bicycle Tomorrow (nazareth did a cover)

Brand New Key ( Melanie ) -

I rode my bicycle past your window last night
I roller skated to your door at daylight
It almost seems like you’re avoiding me
I’m okay alone, but you got something I need

Well, I got a brand new pair of roller skates
You got a brand new key
I think that we should get together and try them out you see
I been looking around awhile
You got something for me
Oh! I got a brand new pair of roller skates
You got a brand new key

I ride my bike, I roller skate, don’t drive no car
Don’t go too fast, but I go pretty far
For somebody who don’t drive
I been all around the world
Some people say, I done all right for a girl

“Zazie Fait de la Bicyclette” by The Plastiscines

“Cycling is Fun” - Shonen Knife

Also, Rasputina and The Dollyrots have covered “Brand New Key”

I love “Motocrash.”

Oh - this one isn’t really about bicycles, but “Big Ninja Bike” by Tanya Stephens is pretty fun (my bike is nicknamed “Red Ninja” so I make it fit, dangit).

Nobody has mentioned “Daisy Belle” a/k/a “A Bicycle Built for Two.”  (In the late 19th/early 20th C. there was a whole raft of popular songs about bicycling; “Daisy Belle” is the only one that has survived.)

My grandmother used to sing “Daisy’s Answer”:

Michael, Michael,
Here is your answer due.
I’m not crazy
All for the love of you.
If you cannot afford a carriage,
There WON’T be any marriage.
‘Cause I’ll be switched
If I get hitched
On a bicycle built for two!

(I’ve heard the ending, “‘Cause I’ll be damned/if I get crammed. ..” but my grandmother was too much of a lady to use that sort of language.)

Don’t forget the one and only “Kids On Bikes” - the band devoted exclusively to songs about bicycling.  Check it out! (myspace.com/verdemahan)

italian blog dedicated to “rock & bike” songs

Nothing came out - the moldy peaches “all i wanna do is ride bikes with you…”

Bicycle Song - Dave Dean’s Musical Forklift

Pedal Power - Dance Band

Bike Rides & High Fives - Rosa

Milk Crates - Rosa

I list over a thousand recorded songs related to bicycling in the Appendix of “Bike&Chain;”.

I further explain some of those which are not readily apparent and identify themes. In all, I estimate there are about 1,500, the remainder mostly written in the 1800’s regarding suffragism and woman’s emancipation.

The Grateful Dead:  “Gone are the days we stopped to decide where we should go.  We just ride”.  From the song Crazy Fingers.
