Tern’s New HSD Levels Up Cargo Biking Without Upsizing the Bike

Tern has refreshed its compact cargo platform with an all-new HSD that stays short and maneuverable while hauling more, riding better, and fitting more riders than ever. It landed today and it’s a considerable update—especially for anyone who wants cargo-bike capability without committing to a full-size longtail.

A Stronger, More Stable HSD

The frame is completely re‑engineered. Tern stretched the wheelbase, lowered the center of gravity, and optimized the geometry for carrying real‑world loads. The numbers tell the story: 190 kg (419 lb) Max Gross Vehicle Weight and a best‑in‑class 80 kg (176 lb) rear rack.

That’s enough for a kid, an adult passenger, a dog, or a week’s worth of groceries—on a bike that’s still shorter than a standard city bike.
From the release:

“HSD was our challenge to design a heavy‑hauling cargo bike, but to make it as easy to ride as a regular bike.”

Mission accomplished. The new frame feels purpose‑built for the kind of mixed‑use riding urban families actually do.

Bosch Gen 5 Power, Now with Class III Options

All models move to Bosch’s latest Gen 5 drive systems—lighter, quieter, and more powerful. Select U.S. builds get boosted to Class III, 28 mph pedal assist, which is a big deal for riders mixing with traffic or covering longer commutes.

Bosch’s newest software features also make an appearance: Battery Lock and Report as Stolen, plus UL 2849 certification for electrical safety.

One Bike for Everyone in the Household

Tern widened the fit range dramatically. The new HSD accommodates riders from 150–205 cm (4’11″–6’9″) and up to 130 kg (286 lb). Petite riders get a lower stepover; tall riders get reinforced, extended components. It’s genuinely a one‑bike‑fits‑all platform.

Still Compact, Still Apartment‑Friendly

Vertical Parking and Vertical Roll remain signature HSD features, letting the bike stand upright in tight spaces or roll through hallways and elevators. FlatFold returns, too—two HSDs can still fit into the back of a small SUV.

Automatic Shifting Arrives

This is the headline upgrade for tech‑minded riders: Bosch eShift comes to the HSD. Two models get automatic shifting systems:

  • HSD S9i — Bosch eShift + 3X3 NINE internal gear hub, 554% gear range, Gates belt, automatic downshifting at stops.
  • HSD P10e — Bosch eShift + TRP drivetrain, wireless shifting, and a full Automatic mode that holds your cadence and handles the gears.

For new cargo‑bike riders, automatic shifting is a huge confidence booster. No thinking, no fumbling—just ride.

Certified for Cargo Duty

The frame and fork are tested to EN 17860 at 190 kg, the cargo‑bike‑specific standard. As the release notes:

“Every cargo bike should be third-party tested to this standard at its claimed max gross vehicle weight.”

Pricing and Models

U.S. pricing starts at $4,999 and tops out at $7,499:

  • HSD P5i — $4,999
  • HSD P00 — $5,699
  • HSD P10e Sport — $5,499
  • HSD S9i Sport — $7,499

Bikes begin arriving in Europe and North America in late summer 2026.

Accessories: A Full Passenger & Cargo Ecosystem

Tern is launching the updated HSD alongside a refreshed accessory lineup:

  • Clubhouse Mini — passenger frame with a new side‑opening rail
  • Storm Box Mini — weatherproof rear bucket with easier loading
  • Sun Shield Mini — UPF 50 canopy
  • Rain Shield Mini — snap‑on rain cover that pairs with the Sun Shield
  • Sidekick Footrests — updated frame‑mounted footrests.
  • Hardshell Hauler — 26 L lockable waterproof case

The ecosystem remains one of Tern’s biggest advantages—modular, durable, and designed for everyday family use. The dog carrier is a favorite accessory of mine.

Bike Hugger Take

Cargo bikes keep getting bigger, heavier, and more specialized. Tern’s HSD goes the other direction: compact, approachable, and easy to live with. The upgrades here—automatic shifting, a stronger frame, a wider rider fit, and Bosch Gen 5—make the HSD feel like a next‑generation city tool rather than a niche cargo hauler.

For riders who want car‑replacement utility without longtail bulk, this update hits the sweet spot. While I’ll stick with my Orox in the country, the HSD is very compelling for the city. A class III motor is a lot of fun.
