Portland Bound: The Next MoSo

user-pic

IMG_1943.jpgLater this month, the Huggas are making our annual pilgrimage to Portland for Webvisions (May 20-22)--one of our favorite Web conferences of the year. In conjunction, for the second year running, Bike Hugger we're throwing a Mobile Social for all local riders and Webvisions attendees. We'll be taking a ride, drinking beer, and giving away a ton of schwag--last year's WV Mobile Social was a gas.

Hugger-in-Chief Byron is speaking at Webvisions this year on the topic "Try Making Yourself More Interesting," but the top of the bill is especially spectacular this year with Mark Frauenfelder (Boingboing.net), Tara Hunt (The Wuffie Factor), and Jared Spool giving keynotes.

And for those of you in the interactive industry, don't forget that there is still time to enter the 2009 Webvisionary Awards. With judges like Jeff Veen, Lynne d Johnson, Molly Holzschlag, and Roger Black, it's a web award that actually means something. Hurry: deadline is May 8.

Frappe Speed!

During our final test before the Bike Hugger Mixer today we achieved frappe speed — that’s 10,000 RPM, even chopping up ice … . hooah!

Posts, photos, and more video to follow.

Bike Hugger Mixer

This weekend at the Des Moines Criterium in Seattle, we’ll have Bettie and some Bike Blenders. We’re mixing up smoothies, selling them, and donating the process to the Des Moines Area Food Bank. Des Moines is the first Mixer event and we’ll see how it goes. Later in the Fall, we’ve have another Mobile Social (our urban ride parties) with the Bike Blenders.

More details to follow. Here’s a short video of us testing out the Bike Blending action

Hugga Freerides

user-pic

Our friends at Kona invited us to Whistler BC’s Kokanee Crankworx

The most ground-breaking gravity fueled mountain bike festival in the history of all things badass.

That means the Huggas are gonna put on some baggy shorts, full-face helmets, some crusty ‘tude, and blast down a hill on a freakin’ Freeride bike — hooah!

Ya know, slopestyle is new for us, but when in Rome. Shit I may even do some huckin’.

Kona will also have their asphalt and utility bikes onsite. I’m hoping to ride one of these to a store and back …

Webvisions

Check below for the ride details and back here for updates.

WebVisions is a two-day web conference that explores the future of Web design, technology, user experience and business strategy.

So what’s a Mobile Social Event?
It’s Like a Tupperware party for bike enthusiasts, only without the beehive hairdo or weird cult-like party games.
No really, what is it?
It’s an intersection of bikes, technology, and culture — we ride, talk bikes, party, and give away product.

Seattle Weekend Cyclocross Events

user-pic

Busy cyclocross weekend coming up in Seattle — The Seattle Cyclocross Series #1 is on Sunday the 30th in Snohomish (directions) and promises to be a great event.

If you’re looking to do a bit of brush up before the race you can get some tips from Jonathan Page and Frank McCormack on Friday (28th) and Saturday (29th). Herriott Sports Performance and Cascade Bicycle Studio will be hosting the Jonathan Page Cyclocross Weekend, including two 3 hour workshops on Saturday and a evening presentation and auction on Friday. Page is America’s premiere cross racer and the best American in history in this discipline. Great chance to see a master at work!

Bikes + Art = Skatepark

user-pic

I was at the Javabean getting espresso and saw a postcard for Bike + Art = Skatepark. I’m still trying to figure out what that is, but the site says,” we’re having a bicycle decorating party, a bike parade, an Art Walk, AND a benefit for River City Skate Park.”

That sounds def like something Bike Hugger would want to do. They’ll decorate bikes, then parade them, and tour South Park all to raise money for the River City Skatepark. River City must mean the Duwamish? And maybe they’ll put a bmx track near the park?

Bike Expo(se)

user-pic

As promised, this year’s Bike Expo was huge. Held again in Magnuson Park, the gloomy Seattle drizzle kept only weenies like me from riding over for a weekend of bike fun. I took advantage of the new two-day pass offered this year and for the bargain price of ten dollars, I showed off my beautiful Cascade bracelet for entry.

The entry to such an exhibition can be a bit overwhelming. Wall-to-wall people, music and televisions with a constant stream, smiley volunteers shoving bags and programs and freebies into your hands and the bling of shiny new bikes calling you by name. Snazzy components, carbon-this and streamline-that, the most beautifully obnoxious new jerseys I’d ever seen (with matching socks, of course). For a moment, I was certain Heaven existed and I was surrounded by it.

Bikes, Beer & BMX

user-pic

This weekend’s Bike Expo is nearly upon us and I’m excited to be bringing the “best of” to those of you who aren’t able to make it out for what is arguably Seattle’s mecca of cycling culture. While I am personally hoping for some dry weather, a light drizzle will certainly not keep me from hitching up the trailer and hauling the family out to kick off the cycling season.

Between the 150+ exhibitors and a packed presentation schedule, I plan to bring plenty of cash for the beer garden and a comfortable pair of shoes. You’ll find me in my Bike Hugger Shirt, camera in-hand.

Bike Hugger@Races

user-pic

Today we launched a new featured blog for races and events. In keeping with our Hugger mission, we’re attending various races, blogging the culture, the backstory, and popularizing cycling.

Our race coverage isn’t about the results or the race, but the event itself, the people, and their bikes. First up is the 24 Hours of the Old Pueblo, where our blogger Owen will join a team, blog, and ride a few laps on a Kona bike, and blog some more.

Seattle's Bike In

user-pic

Featuring an evening of outdoor film and music, brought to you by Northwest Film Forum and the Cascade Bicycle Club, the Seattle Bike In is a unique outdoor event featuring live music and demonstrations about biking and the outdoors. Ending with movies on a big, outdoor screen, the event will be like going to Bike Hugga Town!

Bicycle Film Festival

The Chicago edition of the Bicycle Film Festival runs through Saturday, with dates still scheduled in London, San Francisco, Sydney, Tokyo, and Milan.

Highlights for Saturday include a 32-minute preview of M.A.S.H., an upcoming film about the San Francisco fixie scene by Michael Martin and Gabe Morford (1:30 preview), and a big-screen presentation of the 1976 classic A Sunday in Hell.

Here's a PDF of the Chicago program, and a link to a PDF version of the LA Bicycle Film Festival Poster.

Bike Hugger Shirts

user-pic

hugga shirts By popular demand, we’ve got shirts being printed and they’ll be available soon. I know I’ve wanted one and will wear it off the bike, at races, events, and everywhere else.

The response to Bike Hugger has been great, better than expected, and we appreciate it. Here’s an example from Winky

I love this — in fact I love it so much I want to buy t shirts. Isn’t that the ultimate show of loving something creative and idealists — turning it into a retail experience.

Considering a retail experience, if the shirts sell well (and I think they will), we’ve got a whole line in mind, as well as schwag. If you’re interested in a shirt, post a comment and we’ll get them to you first.

Going into the Fall and the next cycling season, we’ll sponsor a women’s cycling team and you’ll see us at more events. Look for even more Bike Hugger.

Update

Preorder a Bike Hugger Shirt from our Amazon.com store. They’ll be ready to ship in about 2 weeks.
