The Adventure Cycling Association and others have teamed up with the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials to develop a U.S. Bicycle Route System.
U.S. Bicycle Routes must connect two or more states, a State and an international border, or other U.S. Bicycle Routes. U.S. Bicycle Routes are intended to link urban, suburban, and rural areas using a variety of appropriate facilities
Well that’s cool and I’m thinking of what routes would connect here in Washington State … readers?

Mandating a trail connection for every node of the interstate highway system is an even better idea. There are thousands of miles of smooth, uninterrupted, and completely empty four lane highway in the system, and an open trail running (roughly) parallel to it is no less of a waste.
And by “node” I mean all the cities served by the intersection of two single/double digit interstate highways and their endpoints. In other words, it would be possible to ride from Duluth, Minnesota to Miami, Los Angeles, or Laredo.
