In the bike shop: Stem Welder

control-tech_guy.jpg Here’s the guy that made your Control-Tech stem, back when Control-Tech wasn’t just a brand name on an import. He told me that when we first met, he was checking out Bettie, and our stoker stem and said, “I made that stem.” Cool.

He’s now welding titanium frames for Davidson and I bet has lots of industry stories.

Aren’t those the road stems that would shear off and were famously recalled?  If I remember correctly, local sprint king Kenny Williams tore one off AFTER the recall while cornering in a downhill.

Taking it negative? No, I did not ask him that.

If you read the recall - I think they had 6 in 28000 fail.  Hell - I bet if you can make 6 of anything fail.  That said, there are few guys who torque on the bars more than Mr. Williams, so if I were him…I wouldn’t have taken any chances.

Oh - and back in the day, I remember the “Control Tech Racing Team” being the absolute coolest in the area.  Big into cyclocross and development racing.  When I was 18 - they were this shit.

they also violated the second rule of the bro-deal, if you remember . . . they allowed non bros to benefit from the deal, they also discussed the bro-deal, which violated the first rule that there is no bro-deal. it was said, their team was just one wholesale operation and was so big so they could get deals.
