The Bullitt: Danish Cargo Bike

Bullitt little boy.jpg Danish company Larry vs Harry is producing the Bullitt, a “Long John”-style cargo bike. What sets this bike apart from many other long-wheelbase cargo bikes is the use of aluminium in large diameter tubes as opposed to steel. Much as I like the ride of a good steel bike, a cargo bike is a great opportunity to allow aluminium to shine, especially when a manufacturer can really engineer the shapes and diameters of tubing. A lot of cargo bikes are begging for some extra rigidity. The Bullitt comes in 13 versions, with disc brakes and choice of internally geared rear hubs or derailleurs. The lightest version weighs 48lbs. As far as I can tell, there might be only one frame size, but I so want one. Larry Vs Harry bill the Bullitt as a performance cargo bike, and I’d be really keen to test that out.


Unfortunately, I can’t find any indication that there is some sort of normalized North American distribution.

Of course, if I had a Bullitt, it would only be a matter of time before I was attempting to mount dropbars.



The Bike Gallery in Portland has a few of these. I took one for a test ride a few weeks ago and they are very sweet. Turning is a bit goofy, but other than that you could almost make the bike an everyday commuter and be ok with it.

I have one 2 1/2 year old and another on the way (thus the cargo bike urge). The problem is that the box area is pretty small and I don’t know if you could fit two kids in there comfortably.

The challenge here and for all cargos bikes is if it can climb in hilly areas like Seattle.


I think the Bullitt gives you the best shot at a cargo hill climber. The stance is much better for climbing than a baks or the chinese knock-off baks (both of which I have tried).

With a derailleur and a frame that doesn’t flex all that much that is light (for it’s class), Larry v. Harry should do a pretty good job getting you up the inclines. I actually have a good hill next to my place and this looks like the best long john for the job, although you could probably set up the “long bikes” (like the big dummy) and better climbers than this.

Calhoun Cycle in Minneapolis also has a few of these bikes.  The owner has actually ridden one of the Bullits in a century ride a few months ago.  They are surpisingly fast and the handling gets even better as more cargo is loaded on.  The shop personnel use a Bullitt to ferry bikes and other merchandise between the cross-town warehouse and the shop.

I own a Bullitt and I live in a pretty hilly area (Bavaria, Germany). I totally love the bike! It is fast and carries a lot of stuff (kids, beer, barbecue, groceries). The difference between a 3 wheeler and the bullitt is that you can easily go up-hill, because you are on 2 wheels. Compared to the bakfiets it is very leightweight.

For kids transport, I carry my kids (5 and 7, in case they insist on riding with me - what they do because they like the bike) on in the front and the smaller one on the bar right in front of me, between me and the handle-bar. This technique works quite well because the kids can put their feet down on the load area which extends behind the steering pole.

We use the Bullitt in Portugal, quite hilly as well. It works fine with the 8-gear setup, there is enough range for hills, as well with cargo. Right now we are building up a derailler-version with BionX engine to go up really bad hills and have more power for longer city trips..Stay tuned, if you want to know more.
