SXSW 15: Best in Show

Timberline

Of all the bikes seen in Austin, including the ones we rode during SXSW, this Huffy Timberline wins Best in Show. It even matches your cords! The vintage bike from the 70s maybe worth a hundred dollars or so, but much more in style points.

UPDATE

Since we posted this photo here and on Instagram, Cycleast commented

We rescued this bike from destruction, rebuilt it and rented it out during SXSW. It is now sitting at the shop waiting for someone to come and adopt it and give it a forever home.

If you’re still in Austin, go get it!

Issue 22 Sounds Like Dogs

Setting up the wide-angle shot

These dogs photobombed our shoot with their own ideas about disruption and getting our attention during SXSW.

And this dog photobombs us.

With his buddy.

The sounds they made – sniffing, snorting, and cavorting – is what the latest issue of our Magazine is about. What we hear when riding our bikes. Available now on iTunes and the Web, Issue 22 Sounds cost $4 or $16 for an annual subscription.

SXSW 15: Standing In Line

“Who you standing in line for?”

“Nice bike,” she replied.

The complaints you may hear about SXSW are mostly valid: Too corporate and too crowded, but if you seek out venues like the Sweden showcase, there you’ll find music like this…

I hope that’s who, or what, she was in line for. After hosting the Swedes and riding with them to the world premier of Bikes v. Cars, I know they’re in Austin for the art and culture. They brought their bikes, meatballs, and music.

Another Mobile Social Moment

Sure SXSW is a hectic, crowded, oversold and a hyped cultural happening where Miley makes a surprise appearance; there’s a secret P-Diddy party with Lil’ Wayne, and long lines to get wristbands for parties. But Tim Johnson hosted a CX meetup, with a dozen more bike-related panels, and events like ours too.

A CX Meetup

As I wrote in the Medium Bicycles Collection before arriving in Austin, SXSW is what you make it, and we continue to make it about the bike.

Here we are riding through the thick of it, as we’ll do next year.

And what bike was I riding? This Verge.

Hidden City: Merge

Even during SXSW, get up real early to ride and the streets are this quiet. In Austin’s Hidden City, away from the tourists, we didn’t see many cars, just a handful during the ride.

PowerTap History of Innovation

In what’s expected to be another flat year for bike developments, Saris is getting buzz for their new, updated line of Power Meters. We’ll have them in to ride, as soon as they ship. The updates included, chain-ring based and pedals.
