Lance In The Hot Seat

Yesterday word surfaced that the USADA (the United States Anti Doping Agency) formally charged Lance Armstrong with a systematic process of doping and with covering up said doping.

You can read the full letter here.

Lance replied with a statement that basically reads “yeah, this is the same old stuff that keeps getting dismissed.”

Largely, Lance is right on that matter. The allegations in the USADA letter all rely on testimony from other riders and staffers who were given immunity to testify. Unless the USADA pulls out some physical evidence not listed in their letter, their entire case is going to be built on the word of other people.

That’s not to say that Lance did or didn’t dope. If the USADA has some physical proof (an email, a text, a photo) it would of course be more damming and they should reveal it. But the charges in the USADA letter against Armstrong (and pretty much everyone who was connected to his teams for nearly fifteen years) are based on what other riders have to say than really not much has changed.

At this point Lance will have to respond to the letter or will be stripped of his Tour titles by default. He’s also banned from competition while the charges are pending.

Stay tuned for more of this saga, it will be interesting even if it’s yet another damming blow to professional cycling in the U.S.

Full agreement. I’m sure there is a hidden story here - either:

1. They actually have some solid evidence - potentially leaked from the federal investigation.

2. This is fueled by an ego of someone in power who Lance has torqued off - the list is probably long on this one and the most likely reason.

If they don’t have #1 - then someone’s head needs to roll for spending taxpayer money to defend the multiple lawsuits that are going to come (rightfully so) from the stable of attorney’s of Team Lance. What is a season (where the athlete is crushing the field) worth? Especially an athlete that has admitted (Lava Magazine) that he only has a few years to make a go of Triathlon? Not to mention damage to his brand, the Livestrong organization, etc…Yikes.

And let’s say you strip his titles. Who do you award them to? Hopefully someone else that you’ve applied the same degree of scrutiny to over the past decade and a half.

I think the USADA better serves sport when it keeps it’s head on the present and ‘near term’ past.

The should stop re-awarding titles—asterisks them instead.

Races only count if you’re drunk.

This is fucking ridiculous…no explicit evidence!?!

Lance has done tremendous work for the cancer world - the least this so-called organization could do is show some respect.

Whiney bitches moaning about past glory… go take it out on Alpe D’Huez if you have that much energy.
