A 5 S&S Bike Ride

Roll Out

Roll Out from Kihei-Kai

5 S&S travel bikes showed up for a flat spin on Maui yesterday. Of those 5, the new hotness was one built by Milwaukee Bicycle Company in steel with discs and Athena 11. His bros must get pissed cause he’s always late when everything on that bike has to coordinate.

At the intersection after this sign, we turned left towards Wailuku, then back into Kihei along route 311.

We went right

This route is photomapped on Google and high-rez photos are on G+ and Flickr.

S&S bikes are built with couplings that come apart so a traveler can pack the bike in a suitcase. Apart, they look like this on a vacation condo floor. Read more about them in this post.

I’ve wondered how my S&S bike (Litespeed Classic, converted by Bilenky) would do with Di2. The biggest issue I had when traveling was getting the rear derailleur to work well after reattaching the cables. I’m thinking someone must make an in-line coupler for the Di2 cables, and that the ability for the kit to adjust itself would be helpful.

It’s never more than a twist of the rear barrel adjustor right or left to get the bike shifting right with Shimano or SRAM for us. I’d run mech drivetrains on my travel bike for less chance of something going wrong while traveling. However, there are good bike shops here in Maui so you can always shift like shit until you get to one. Don’t know if anyone has done inline cables for DI2. Mark may know…

I’ve never had to touch a thing on my derailleurs, and I completely remove my rear der.  Just re-mount, and snug up the barrel-couplers and I’m set.  Di2 should be easy, but I don’t think they offer that option yet.
