More About the Sutro

Track bike with Alfine, bullhorns, and a barcon shifter

Mission Bicycle didn’t invent the 8-speed hub or the first frame with internally routed cables and there’s nothing new about track geometry. The big news about the Sutro is that Mission combined these elements in a way that hasn’t been done before. If the Sutro was a production bike, maybe in two colors and three sizes (small, medium, large) - it would be pretty impressive. It weighs 24 pounds.

But this is a custom bike and each one is designed by the customer. Mission builds the wheels by hand, the frame comes in five sizes and they have each frame painted to order, one at a time, in one of 200 colors. More photos lightboxed on G+.

As we learned with our Drop-Bar Nexus project, the shifters are always an issue with internal gears on road bikes. Mission found a solution they swear works and it’s at the end of a bullhorn. They’re probably the only operation in the world that’s building bikes with both bullhorns and internally geared hubs. I’ll discover how well this bike works on Saturday when I arrive in Austin for SXSW. I’m riding this bike in our Mobile Social.

Mission will announce the pricing and availability soon. Expect frames for under $500.00 and a complete bike above $1,000.00.

This month we launched our new Velocity collection and once back in town, will settle into the Spring, Summer, and then Cross season with the D-Plus.

Bike Hugger’s more than 5-year history is intertwined with our friends in Austin. It’s there that I came up with the idea for a blog about bike culture, riding socially at tech events, and launched Built.

In recent messages, I’ve been asked

Where can we find bikes?

and

Do we need a badge for that?

This year it’s easier than ever to get a bike with SXCycles, a free bike share program. Reserve one from Velolet now. Also check the local shops in town for rentals, craigslist, and thrift stores.

Austin is a total bike town and that’s another reason we visit every year. Also, even for the casual cyclist, here’s a tip: downtown Austin is about to get gridlocked and the smart attendee zips around on a bike.

To the badge questions, the free Bike Share requires a badge, but the Mobile Socials do not. You do need a wristband to get into the Google Village for the start and end of the ride on Saturday. The ride on Saturday requires no badge or wristbands.

Note: riding with us is not required either, you’re welcome to just show up for the party.

So, in addition to Facebook, we just made a simple form and calendar where you can RSVP to our Mobile Socials. Also add yourself to the volunteer list.

Schemer

We’ve got a scheme for the MoSos on Schemer – here’s an invite to join me there. Schemer is Google’s new tool for finding fun things to do and the Mobile Socials are fun.

We’ll publish a Google Map of the routes later this week.

I’m also racing Single Speed and not sure how I’ll feel after Interbike and the kind of night that had a BMX send off, strippers on a swing set, hookers telling us good job, a female bodybuilder, puppet show, and a dog with a camera.

As I told Mark V, “if I’d woken up with a goat in my room would’ve said, ‘hey cool do you know that dog with the camera?’”

We’ll have full recaps and all the bike pr0n from Interbike as soon as we recover with another bottle of Nunn.

Until then, see recaps from BikeBiz

There were fixies, there were folding bikes, there was a skidding trike, there were three boom box bikes, and there were full suss MTBs. All were welcome. Fixie chicks with thigh chainring tattoos mixed with execs in smartly-pressed shirts.

and VegasArts

the real treat was to see people riding kid-sized bikes strung with lights, bikes pulling speaker trailers, an adult-sized hot wheels trike, etc.

with thanks to New Belgium Brewery for throwing the block party.

Back to how I’ll feel in the race today … expect to see a Suffer Face.

Before the Interbike Mobile Social on Thrusday, I stopped by the Tern Bicycles booth to down a couple of colas. I had learned my lesson from Interbike two years ago: in a desert environment, drinking hard liquor because I’m thirsty is a terrible idea. I call the photo above “Two cups, one guy”

Later that night Byron and I found ourselves at the sinks of the bar’s restroom, our wide-eyed reflections greeting us in the mirror. Byron quietly says, “Dude, I think this might be the best MoSo ever, ” and I respond, “How could it not be?”

I have often said that I hate Las Vegas, but I need to refine that statement: I don’t like Vegas, but the people of that city are simply awesome. Every local the MoSo ride came in contact with was just outstanding. Drivers waived at us, the bouncers were great dudes (Big D is the man!)…..even the hookers on the strip cheered us on. The energy of the night was just so good. And just about every colour of weird was represented…grown men on Big Wheels, miniature dogs with Go-cameras, electric-boosted tricycles drag-racing the group….though I didn’t see any Elvis impersonators, to be honest.

Thanks to so many people who made our night, especially the whole Tern crew, the Beat Coffee House, Interbike, Nuun, Green Guru, New Belgian Brewery (well done!), and all the bike people who came out to party with us.
