Where the Bike Lane Ends

The 7th annual Mobile Social SXSW 13 was held on Saturday under stormy skies near where the bike lane ends in Austin. The weather tempered the turnout and that meant everyone got into the Chevy Tweethouse to party with us after the ride. I heard we went through 7 or 8 kegs and all the BBQ you could eat.

Ride Start

To avoid the weather and get back for the beer and food, we rode a quick route around the university, buzzed the capital, and back to Mellow Johnnys. Fast Folks were there, regulars, and old friends.

Our route this year stormed the Capital

Thanks for coming out and join us next year for the 8th one.

Free bikes are fun

En route to Austin today for another Hugga Show a SXSW. A Mobile Social, Bike Meetup, and our bike maker event, Built are planned. Jokingly called it the Southbysequestor cause it’ll def suck up all my time while there, as it’s done for 9 years, 7 of those with Bike Hugger. And good times they are, especially now that our friends at Tern offer attendees free bikes to ride.

I’m also riding each morning out in the Texas Hill country. Ping me on Twitter if you’d like to join us.

Saturday

7th annual Mobile Social SXSW 13 at the Chevy Tweethouse inside Mellow Johnnys. Ride with us around town, then back to the Tweethouse for beer, bbq, and music. No credentials are needed for the ride, but a badge or wristband from us is to get into the Tweethouse.

Sunday

Bike Culture Meetup – geek out with us about the bike while we’re in town, ask any questions too: tire pressure, shaving legs, saddle sores?

Departed from the Sands

The 7th edition of the Mobile Social Interbike was like all of them so far, a rolling bike bacchanal on the Strip. We rode to Fremont again, parked in the Alley behind the Downtown Cocktail Room where New Belgium served us beer, and picked up locals along the way at every stoplight. While the music played from the Green Guru chariot, photos were taken by us, tourists, and motorists.

Taking photos of people taking photos

Knog lights were flashing on Terns too while big-wheels pedaled. Posted earlier on the surfing and so cool that Santa showed up. Next year with Interbike moving to Mandalay, were not sure yet how we’ll ride the 8th edition, but will talk about that next Summer.

The 7 editions have all been good with each one better. We even made the local Vegas culture weekly.

Kim and Alexis salute the ride

Back for our 7th year, the Tern Bicycles Mobile Social Interbike will ride the Strip to Old Town Vegas and arrive at a New Belgium Block Party. This is what we do at SXSW, but in Vegas with way more neon and weirdness going on.

Mark whipped the crowd into an car-hating frenzy immediately prior to the Mobile Social ride. No, not really. He’s giving directions, telling everybody to stay right, obey the rules, don’t run lights, etc.

Photos: Cyclelicious

Every year we wonder how we get to do this ride again. As I told Mark V, “if I’d woken up with a goat in my room would’ve said, ‘hey cool do you know that dog with the camera?’”
